Oxalates

Oxalates are naturally occurring, plant defense compounds found in many common foods — even those widely labeled as “superfoods” and healthy, e.g. spinach, almonds, beets, sweet potatoes, dark chocolate, and more.

Because this topic is rarely discussed in mainstream nutrition, many people — especially those with digestive challenges, mineral imbalances, kidney stone history, or chronic inflammatory symptoms — who struggle with joint pain, fatigue, urinary issues, eye problems, unexplained inflammation, etc.  may never consider oxalates as a potential piece in their health picture. Understanding how oxalates interact with the body allows us to make informed, personalized choices that support long-term vitality and balance.

An oxalate is a sharp crystal like compound found naturally in plants. They can bind to minerals like calcium magnesium, iron and contribute to symptoms that often are unexplainable if oxalates are not considered. As a civilization we have moved away from seasonal eating which would naturally reduce oxalates in the diet as vegetables would only be eaten when in the growing season.  Oxalates are important to be aware of  and could be a contributor to ongoing discomfort and dis-ease.

Bringing awareness to oxalates allows us to better listen to the body.
